Every KCMSD scholar deserves to be supported by at least 5 one-on-one relationships with caring individuals regardless of how that occurs. BE 1! creates a conversation that inspires the transformative power of widespread community engagement; how and where you choose to share your gifts is a matter of personal discernment. For those that aren't sure where to begin, we provide a list of agencies that have a history of serving KCMSD scholars and that have requested to be partners. How do I get involved? What do I have to do to become a volunteer?
Each partner organization has different requirements for mentoring. Requirements include, but are not limited to, filling out an extensive application, background checks, and different training requirements. Please contact the partner organization directly for more specific information.
Can I participate in more than one partner organization?
This is a matter of gifts. If your choice to share your gifts with the scholars of the KCMSD leads you to participating in multiple ways then yes, that's entirely appropriate.
Is there any training for volunteers and if so, who does it?
The organization you volunteer with will provide the training necessary.
How will the five caring relationships per scholar work? Are they each independent or will they coordinate efforts?
The more that caring individuals work closely together, the stronger the network of caring relationships becomes. So while many of the programs that people choose to engage through don't focus on coordination of efforts, BE 1! recommends it where appropriate. Beyond simply engaging with fellow volunteers, BE 1! encourages everyone to build relationships with parents and teachers of KCMSD scholars where appropriate.
Does BE 1! work with scholars in all economic/social/race groups or is it geared to high risk, low income minority scholars?
BE 1! is a conversation about every scholar in the KCMSD.
Do I have to join one of the partner organizations or can BE 1! offer me opportunities itself for me to help?
BE 1! is not about joining partner organizations, non-partner organizations or anything else like that. BE 1! is about creating a conversation. From that conversation, people often choose to participate through one of our partner agencies but that is a by-product of the conversation, not the purpose of BE 1!

No. BE 1! has partnered with established youth-serving organizations. The role of BE 1! to create a conversation about transforming the KCMSD through widespread community engagement. When that happens, we also provide information about avenues for engagement.

What qualifications must my organization meet to be part of BE 1!?
All BE 1! partners are relationship-based programs. Sometimes this means we are partnered with a program within a larger organization. As BE 1!’s focus is engagement through relationships, we ask our partner organizations to share in and endorse this focus. If your organization shares this vision we have several opportunities available for sponsoring or partnering. Contact our Parterships Team (

If these partner organizations already exist why do we need BE 1!?
BE 1! is specifically focused on creating a conversation about transforming the KCMSD. One of the ways this transformation takes place is through people sharing their gifts with our scholars -- choosing to BE 1! Once someone has made the choice to BE 1!, we offer a list of ways to accomplish this. BE 1! is a messenger, not a service organization.
How do I know my child will be safe?
Each of our partner organizations has strict guidelines for participation in their program. Not only are volunteers well-trained, our partner orgs do extensive background checks on volunteers. Additionally, all our partner organizations have support in place for both mentors and mentees. Please contact the organization you are interested in partnering with for more information on the specific safeguards they provide.

Can I make a donation? Where is the money kept?
You can make a donation by visiting the Donations section of this website. All contributions are made through and kept at the BE 1! fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.
When I contribute to BE 1! what will my contributions be used for?
Contributions to BE 1! pay for the basic costs of organizing a conversation that is designed to reach everyone who lives, works, worships and plays in the KCMSD: printing materials and feeding volunteers. Because the funds are maintained by the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, all information is public.
Is anyone associated with BE 1! paid and if so, by whom?
No. BE 1! does not currently have any paid staff.
